An enlightened project
With the roots of Buddhism tracing back to caves in China, the unusual design of the two-storey concrete framed structure with precast concrete and imported stone façades is a contemporary take on traditional Buddhist buildings.
The purpose built community centre was built not only for Buddhist Community devotees, but also for the people of Christchurch.
The building has a total floor area of 1400m2 and houses a meditation hall, library, museum, various administration rooms and classrooms, a dining hall, and a tea house which is open to the public. Encompassed by the building is a tranquil courtyard garden.
