Auckland Library Café
- Division: Interiors
- Location: Auckland
- Started: April 2006
- Cost: $1.9 million
- Client: Auckland City Council
- Completed: April 2007
Creation of a new outdoor weather-tight glazed lantern area with fully functioning café and international news area in the north-western corner of the Library’s ground floor.
To allow uninterrupted public use of the library facility while new construction progressed, the works required internal sound barriers and exterior public protection structures.
The café includes new toilets, kitchen facilities, an office, a cool store, and a servery area. Dining spaces consist of a retiled and refurbished internal space, lantern area, and two-storey high louvered glazed wall enclosure. A modern entrance was constructed using highly finished raw construction materials: polished concrete and honed block work with aluminium clad structural steel. Included during this stage of works was the provision of an international news area where the public are able to view the latest international headlines on plasma screens. New entry doors were installed at the main entrance with new concrete works and security systems altered to improve entry and exit routes.
