Manukau Harbour Crossing

  • Division: Engineering
  • Location: Auckland
  • Started: November 2007
  • Cost: $180 million
  • Client: Transit NZ
  • Completed: Under Construction

A Fletcher, Beca, Higgins, and Transit alliance to deliver an eight lane carriageway between Rimu Road and Gloucester Park Interchange, and a six lane carriageway across the harbour between Queenstown Road and Walmsley interchanges, as well as a new Mangere Bridge (to sit alongside the bridge, finished by Fletcher in 1983).

Once complete the crossing will provide quicker and safer travel between Waitakere, Auckland and Manukau Cities, and will relieve congestion on the central motorway network and provide a strategic alternative route across the region.

There are complex environmental and community issues associated with the project. Most significant is the relationship between the project and the Onehunga foreshore, including the Hopua Crater. Much of the project’s success will be measured in terms of Fletcher’s ability to engage the community in this area. Management of traffic flow is another key success factor with this section of motorway being part of the strategic link between Auckland City and the Auckland Airport.

There were considerable geotechnical challenges to overcome in constructing the new Mangere Bridge with piles founded within weak sandstone and 60m depth of very soft soils in the Hopua Crater. Sustainability and reducing carbon emissions was of particular interest to TANZ.  A range of KPIs measuring Fletcher’s environmental performance have been developed together with implementation strategies, building on the success of the sustainability initiatives implemented on the Northern Busway project.

Put To The Test
Momentum is really starting to build at the Manukau Harbour Crossing (MHX) Alliance project with about half of the piling and the first bridge piers starting to emerge out of Manukau Harbour’s murky depths.

It’s a hard road
Although construction of the new Mangere Bridge is the most visual part of the Manukau Harbour Crossing (MHX) project, the bulk of the work lies in widening and duplicating the existing motorways on SH20.

Manukau Harbour Crossing
With the incentive of building Auckland’s front door to the Rugby World Cup 2011, the team at MHX is well inspired.
