Tauranga Harbour Link – Stage 2
- Division: Engineering
- Location: Tauranga
- Started: May 2007
- Cost: $180 million
- Client: NZ Transport Agency
- Completed: December 2009
The 3.5km long design and build Tauranga Harbour Link Stage 2 included the four-laning of the existing 750m long harbour bridge causeway, construction of a 466m long duplicate harbour bridge alongside the existing bridge, construction of a 90m long duplicate aerodrome bridge and construction of a 525m long four-lane flyover from the harbour bridge to Takitimu Drive with associated on and off-ramps to the roads below to bypass the current traffic bottleneck in the Chapel Street/Marsh Street area.
The upgraded link provides a four-lane expressway from Takitimu Drive to Hewletts Road, both of which already had four lanes, enabling more efficient and quicker access between Mt Maunganui and reducing congestion on the existing harbour bridge. Brian Perry Civil provided substantial piling resources to the project, including a sophisticated betonite piling system which enabled piling to be carried out without the use of expensive steel casing as a lining. The duplicate harbour bridge was opened on the 7th of September 2009.
