Life's a game

Extensive redevelopment of Eden Park into a venue suitable for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

The redevelopment will increase the capacity of the current stadium from 45,000 to 60,000 people and involves construction of a new permanent South Stand, temporary seating on East and West Stands, new corporate boxes, and media and player facilities.

Due to basalt flows from the Mt Eden volcano vent underlying the site of the new South Stand, the foundations were constructed in highly variable rock conditions - ranging from solid basalt through to fractured scoria. Extensive excavations were required and the team had to test drill and log each bore hole at each column location to determine that there was a minimum of 5m of competent basalt below each foundation. Test drilling determined the extent of the excavation and in most cases they had to pour site concrete under the foundations to bring the excavation back to the required levels.
