Construction of a new $10 million multi-purpose foyer/exhibition space, together with two new lecture theatres at the AUT University Akoranga Campus.
The multi-faceted design poses many structural challenges. The exterior precast panels are being installed on two lines of incline giving the building a folded trapezoid shape, and the structural steel frame uses cantilever principle to provide multiple levels of roof lines and canopies.
Development of an economical and robust support system for over 1000m2 of folded MDF acoustic panels throughout the interior also proved to be tricky - balancing robustness with weight and site constraints.
Aside from the building itself various ground works were also carried out - and not just re-contouring the ground - rather, a lot of sub-soil drainage, re-running public sewer lines and various infrastructure works for future development on the campus.
