Courtney Road Drain Upgrade

  • Division: Engineering
  • Location: Tauranga
  • Started: September 2008
  • Cost: $4.3 million
  • Client: Tauranga City Council
  • Completed: April 2009

The Courtney Road drain upgrade project provided multi-disciplinary work for Brian Perry Civil.

The project involved widening and deepening 300m of an existing open drain to help reduce flooding after heavy rainfall, requiring the project team to undertake varying work activities.

Cold-rolled piles were installed to form a permanent wall. Manufactured in China, this alternative to sheet piles generated savings for the client.

Access for the upgrade was limited to the drain itself. All piling and excavation equipment has had to track up and down the drain, limiting the size of equipment that could be used and meaning activities couldn't be overlapped. The drain is also tidal so control gates and pumps kept the working area dry.
