AUT WE Stage 2 – School of Art & Design
- Division: Interiors
- Location: Auckland
- Started: November 2008
- Cost: $5.6 million
- Client: AUT University
- Completed: March 2009
The second stage of AUT’s School of Art & Design refurbishment to Levels 5-7 (the two-level first stage refurbishment was completed a year ago).
This project included art and design studios with a multitude of facilities including: office / admin, design studios, computer labs, computer rendering, green screen room, animation room, digital lab, printmaking studio, book binding, darkrooms and lighting studios with cycloramas. The space caters for a capacity of roughly 750 students.
The project had a demanding schedule – 12 weeks, including Christmas and New Year for demolition and fit-out. At the same time, the building was live and public access to and from the lower floors was needed throughout the construction period. This demanded some lateral thinking, for example at the eastern end of the building a scaffold tower with a ply-lined chute was used to remove demolition and waste materials to reduce impact on the use of the stairs.
