Tuai Penstock Foundations
- Division: Engineering
- Location: Waikato
- Started: February 2009
- Cost: $1.2 million
- Client: Genesis Energy
- Completed: June 2009
The project provided new foundations for the penstocks – large enclosed intake pipes – that take water from Lake Whakamarino down to Genesis Energy’s Tuai Powerhouse.
The job involved 16 bored piles and eight substantial reinforced concrete beams that run under the penstocks as well as longitudinal concrete beams linking the piles either side of the penstocks. Once the beams were completed, pedestals were constructed on top of the beams to support the penstocks.
The project had a challenging site location: a very steep slope immediately adjacent to the penstocks. The penstocks were in constant use, carrying extremely high water pressures. Operating plant, especially the Lo-Drill, so close to the them meant a high degree of risk had to be mitigated.
