Smart Motorway Barriers
Smart barriers for Smart Motorway
The section of State Highway 1 between Ngauranga and the Terrace Tunnel in Wellington is New Zealand’s first “Smart Motorway”. It uses Intelligent Transport Solutions (ITS) to smooth traffic flows and prevent congestion. Opened in July 2016, the upgrade also included the widening of the motorway in both directions and replacement of the central median safety barrier.
Seovic constructed the 2.5km of new TL-5 Median barrier for main contractor Fletcher. As Ngauranga to Aotea Quay is such a critical link in Wellington’s road network, all works on the motorway had to be undertaken during night closures to prevent disruption to traffic. With only a confined window each night to install the barrier, Seovic’s speed of productivity was a considerable advantage.

The majority of the barrier was split level so Seovic’s slip-form machinery enabled the barriers to be constructed considerably faster, simpler and with less cost than precast or conventional insitu methods.
