Melling Station on the move
Last week, a major milestone was reached for the SH2 Melling Transport Improvements project, with the existing Melling Station safely moved to its temporary storage site, around a kilometre south of its previous location. This clears space for construction of the new Melling interchange and bridge over Te Awa Kairangi/Hutt River.
The 25-tonne station was moved by Britton Housemovers, who will return later in the project to shift it to its final location as part of the new Melling Station and park-and-ride.
Built in 1953, Melling Station is an iconic local landmark. A conservation plan is guiding the relocation and restoration to ensure the building’s character is retained while meeting modern safety and accessibility standards. As far as practicable, the station, which has heritage value, will be fully integrated into the new facilities.
Over the coming months, crews will continue preparing the site for the new station and interchange, while wider works progress across the area. The SH2 Melling Transport Improvements project is part of the wider Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi programme, which is a transformational project for Lower Hutt. As well as the new SH2 interchange and river bridge, it includes crucial flood protection and river restoration work, improvements to public transport, walking & cycling routes, local roads, as well as urban revitalisation of the Lower Hutt city centre and a new pedestrian bridge over Te Awa Kairangi – Hutt River.
