Specialist Operator Alexia “Lex” Burton with the Hawke’s Bay Stabilisation team describes her role as “a bit of everything.” Lex operates the truck that delivers the metal used to prep the road for stabilisation with cement. After delivering the metal, she stays onsite to operate the vibrating roller for compaction. She’s currently learning to operate more equipment, including the cement spreader and the hoe. “What I like about my work is I'm doing something different every day – nothing’s the same."

Lex says Higgins provided her the opportunity to be involved in road construction, a field she had not previously worked in. Before joining Higgins, she was in road maintenance. “My role challenges me to test my ability to do certain things, especially if I haven’t done it before. My co-workers are always behind me, willing to share their knowledge and help me overcome any challenge. The challenges build potential. I believe I can do anything if I put my mind to it.”
