Nandu Balakrishnan’s journey at Higgins began in 2019 as a civil laboratory technician in Auckland, where he spent three years building a strong foundation in the industry. Eager to broaden his skills, Nandu gained valuable experience elsewhere before returning to Higgins in 2023. “The opportunity to work on iconic projects and be part of a company with such a strong reputation, a great work culture, and very supportive management was simply too good to pass up.”

Now, as Traffic Management Planning (TMP) Manager for the Wellington region, Nandu leads a team delivering traffic management planning across Wellington, Kapiti, and Masterton. They’re working on key projects like Te Awa Kairangi, the Wellington City Council maintenance contract, Hutt City wharfline, and Silverstream pipe work. “I am excited to be part of Te Awa Kairangi – a once-in-a-lifetime project that will reshape the way people travel through the region.”

Nandu is passionate about solving complex traffic puzzles, committed to safety and efficiency, and values collaboration. “No two days are the same. One day, I am working on traffic staging; the next, I am collaborating with councils, contractors, and stakeholders. Every challenge is a puzzle – figuring out how to keep people moving safely and efficiently gives me real satisfaction as a traffic engineer.” 

He appreciates Higgins’ supportive culture and empowering leadership, which provide opportunities to grow, take on new challenges, and make a real impact. His wife, Amrutha Indira Madhu, a technician at the Higgins laboratory in Ōtaki, agrees: “Higgins provides us with training, mentoring, and genuine opportunities to step up.” Nandu feels supported every step of the way. “It gives me the confidence to take on big challenges. My managers have been incredible – always supportive, encouraging, and empowering. Their trust has given me the chance to grow and take on bigger responsibilities.”
