The Accord Piritahi case study focuses on reducing construction waste by saving and relocating homes.
The Accord Piritahi case study focuses on reducing construction waste by saving and relocating homes.
Construction is the biggest contributor to landfill waste in New Zealand. Auckland alone produces at least 568,935 tonnes of construction and demolition waste a year. Piritahi's House Removal Programme is focused on reducing these statistics by removing homes in the most environmentally responsible and cost-effective way possible, by saving and relocating homes.
Piritahi is an alliance responsible for the delivery of the Auckland Civils Alliance Programme (ACAP), involving large scale infrastructure works and land remediation for new housing developments currently underway in Tāmaki Makaurau. Leading this work is Kāinga Ora: Homes and Communities, the partner and sole client of Piritahi. Throughout the life of the ACAP, there are approximately 7,000 state houses that require removal from large scale project areas. On top of this, Kāinga Ora is upgrading and removing thousands more homes as part of its national public housing programme.

The Accord City Rail Link case study focuses on embracing diversity and inclusion and supporting better employment outcomes for Māori and Pasifika in the construction sector.
City Rail Link (CRL) is New Zealand's largest ever transport infrastructure project, with an investment of $4.4billion to build a 3.45km underground rail link below Auckland's city centre – expected to be completed in 2024.
As part of its broader social outcomes strategy, City Rail Link Limited (CRL Ltd) decided to build more than just the rail link by developing its Progressive Employment Programme in 2019. The programme shares many of the goals set out in the Accord – including making people feel valued, which sits at the heart of the programme. It focusses on creating career and employment opportunities, embracing diversity and inclusion and supporting better outcomes for Māori and Pasifika.
CRL Ltd's approach recognises and rewards effort and successes in the workplace, and reinforces health, safety and mental wellbeing as key priorities for young people.

Life has become easier and safer all of our contractors, thanks to the creation of an online prequalification portal.
Life has become easier and safer all of our contractors, thanks to the creation of an online prequalification portal.
Until recently, contractors wanting to work with Fletcher Construction had to prepare and submit paper forms as part of the prequalification process. Each new time they wanted to work with us, they had to provide that same information all over again. The new prequalification portal, called Mahi Tahi, means they now only have to apply once. They’re then become part of a central database that’s available to anyone in the business looking for an approved contractor.
As well as saving time, there is a significant safety element to Mahi Tahi. As part of the pre-qualification process, we are able to make sure contractors understand our safety requirements. Higgins GM Brian Kirtlan says it’s about keeping everyone on site safe – staff and contractors. “This new pre-qualification system is part of our broader safety re-set which is about us all working together to keep ourselves safe.”

The Accord Fonterra case study focuses on improving health and safety outcomes at construction sites.
Following two construction site fatalities in 2009, Fonterra wanted to understand how it could avoid future incidents. The dairy co-operative decided to fundamentally change the culture at its worksites – over the following ten years Fonterra developed a robust, yet innovative, approach to site culture, worker welfare and project efficiency. These changes not only made Fonterra’s employees and contractors safer and healthier, but also made its projects more successful.
